There are hundreds of millions of Russian speakers in the world, mainly living in the ex-USSR territories. As opposed to what some people may think, Russian is far from being an extinct language.

Russian Around the World

Through their historical role in the USSR, three other countries in addition to Russia speak Russian as their first language: Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. These territories combine to form a total of some 350 million Russian-speaking inhabitants.

Other nearby regions also use Russian, either as an official language or as an administrative language. For example, there are oblasts (a type of administrative division like an independent region, roughly comparable to states) of Donetsk, Kherson and Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine, and Constanta in Romania that total around 30 million more Russian speakers in these regions.

In Israel, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Russian is used as an administration language or in a particular trade sector. It can also be the common language between different ethnicities, and therefore has become a language of interethnic relations.

International organizations other than the CEI (Central European Initiative), which essentially comprises ex-USSR countries, have adopted this language. This is the case for UNESCO, WHO (the World Health Organization), SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and the ISO (International Standardization Organization).

Russian in the Professional Sphere

During the Soviet Union’s communist years, and even before that, the Russian-speaking nation was a leader for scientific research in general. Many studies and documents, mainly in the fields of physics, chemistry and mathematics, were singularly developed in Russia. The results of these scientific Soviet studies are still available online, but exclusively on Russian sites. Russian language knowledge or the use of a translator are the ways to access these documents and help develop new or additional scientific studies.

In the context of the current economy where today Russia is a member of G8, the are countless sectors where speaking Russian is considered an advantage for advancing trade, collaboration, and negotiation. Some economically prominent fields for Russian language speakers are real estate, tourism and computing. Russian language has also proven key in certain human population impact fields like medicine or agriculture. Russian has certainly not lost its status as a language tied to research and science, today it’s still heavily relied on and used for applications in technical sciences as well as cooperation with space missions.

The Subtleties of the Russian Language

Russian is subdivided into three main dialect families: northern Russian, spoken in the Murmansk, Yaroslavl and Leningrad oblasts among others; central Russian, which is heard in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow; and southern Russian, as spoken in Ryazan and Velikiye Luki.
