Swedish around the World

About 10 million people across the globe speak Swedish. According to this figure, this Germanic-origin language is in 89th position of the world’s most spoken languages. Swedish speakers logically are mainly found in Sweden, where 85% of the population speak Swedish as their native first language. Even there however Swedish is not the country’s official language, or at least not as defined in Sweden’s constitution.

Swedish is however the 2nd official language in Finland, where about half of the population speaks Swedish. In Germany and the United States lately more people are choosing to learn Swedish. Swedish universities have been welcoming more and more people desirous to learn or improve their study of the Swedish culture and language, which has also become one of the most popular Nordic languages.

Swedish in the Professional Sphere

Thinking of Sweden, we often automatically also think of the global Swedish brand IKEA. But this popular brand doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Swedish culture and language encompasses, or what it truly means to be Swedish. Sweden has a beautiful countryside and a distinct warmth and hospitality in its people. Discovering the Swedish way of life and understanding its culture by means of its language is a truly magnificent and unique experience.

Swedish speech also open doors to other Scandinavian languages. There are certainly many differences between these, but also many more similarities can be drawn from each of them as well. Hence it’s possible for a fluent Swedish speaker, at least in written form, to understand also Norwegian, Danish, and even Icelandic. An experienced translator who’s mastered the Swedish language will also be able to correctly decipher the written content of other Nordic languages.

The Swedish economy is particularly accessible to the rest of the world. As a result, Sweden is open to different kinds of investment and welcomes those who make the effort to understand their language, either personally or through the means of a translator or translation agency such as Atenao.

The Subtleties of the Swedish language

As previously mentioned, Scandinavian languages have many things in common. A translator whose native language is Swedish will also be able to tell the difference between the various other similar Nordic Germanic languages, even if some words of a sentence are identical. For a simple example, the number “three” is spoken the same way in Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian: “tre”. However, the first two numbers are different in these languages. “One” is “ett” in Swedish and “een” in Danish. For “two”, it is “två” in Swedish and “to” in Danish.
